The Moon and Starfish has been a feature of the Clacton sea front since 1997, making it the only Wetherspoon pub in Tendring until the Bottle Kiln opened in Dovercourt 20 years later. Situated in what was once part of the Royal Hotel, which was first built in around 1872 as one of the first buildings in the then new (in July 1871) coastal town of Clacton-on-Sea, it offers coastal views. Opposite the Pavilion Fun Park and a short walk from Clacton Pier it offers meals throughout the day as well as a range of ales and a regular cider. Being only a short walk from Pier Avenue and Jackson Road most Clacton bus services pass nearby, and the railway station is less then half a mile away. During Clacton carnival week in August it overlooks the route of the procession, and is similarly conveniently situated for views of the Clacton Air Show at the end of each August. The pub participates in the national Wetherspoon beer and cider festivals each year, and has been a regular supporter of the Clacton Real Ale & Cider Festival.
